Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or 1 ounce piloncillo/panela
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • A pinch of cloves
  • A pinch of star anise
  • A pinch of allspice berries
  • 1 strip of orange peel
  • 2/3 cup blood orange juice
  • 1.50 oz rum or aguardiente

Instructions

  1. In a pot, combine water, brown sugar or piloncillo, cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, allspice berries, and orange peel.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let the sugar melt, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add blood orange juice and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
