Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg white from the yolk.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolk and sugar until pale and fluffy.
  3. In a saucepan, heat the milk, cream, and nutmeg until steaming.
  4. Temper the egg mixture by gradually adding the hot milk mixture while whisking.
  5. Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and heat, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened. Avoid boiling.
  6. Remove from heat, then stir in vanilla extract and bourbon if desired.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  8. Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
