Ingredients
- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg white from the yolk.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk the egg yolk and sugar until pale and fluffy.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, cream, and nutmeg until steaming.
- Temper the egg mixture by gradually adding the hot milk mixture while whisking.
- Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and heat, stirring constantly, until slightly thickened. Avoid boiling.
- Remove from heat, then stir in vanilla extract and bourbon if desired.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
