Ingredients

  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 to 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Pinch of grated nutmeg
  • 1 ounce bourbon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until thick and fluffy.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the milk, cream, and nutmeg. Heat until steaming, stirring occasionally.
  3. Slowly whisk a portion of the hot milk into the egg yolk mixture, then pour the rest of the milk in while whisking.
  4. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook on medium-low heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Do not boil.
  5. Strain the mixture into a bowl, then whisk in the bourbon and vanilla.
  6. Chill for at least 3 hours.
  7. Serve with a sprinkle of cinnamon or freshly grated nutmeg.
