Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon for topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over low heat, whisk together the whole milk, ground nutmeg, and pure vanilla extract. Add the cinnamon stick to the mixture.
  2. Bring the milk mixture to a low boil, stirring occasionally (approximately 3-4 minutes).
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks with sugar until the mixture becomes pale in color.
  4. Add a spoonful of the hot milk to the egg yolks and sugar, mixing well. Continue until about 1/4 cup of the hot liquid has been whisked in.
  5. Slowly pour in the remaining hot liquid, whisking constantly.
  6. Transfer the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat until it begins to thicken enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  7. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the heavy cream.
  8. Chill the eggnog until it's ready to serve.
  9. Serve the eggnog with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a cinnamon stick, or a dollop of whipped cream.
