Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 3 large egg yolks
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon for topping (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over low heat, whisk together the whole milk, ground nutmeg, and pure vanilla extract. Add the cinnamon stick to the mixture.
- Bring the milk mixture to a low boil, stirring occasionally (approximately 3-4 minutes).
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks with sugar until the mixture becomes pale in color.
- Add a spoonful of the hot milk to the egg yolks and sugar, mixing well. Continue until about 1/4 cup of the hot liquid has been whisked in.
- Slowly pour in the remaining hot liquid, whisking constantly.
- Transfer the mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat until it begins to thicken enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the heavy cream.
- Chill the eggnog until it's ready to serve.
- Serve the eggnog with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a cinnamon stick, or a dollop of whipped cream.
